Run the Runway raises over £46,000 for cancer support charity Maggie’s Highlands

Maggie’s Highlands is delighted to announce that this year’s Run the Runway event, which took place on Saturday 22nd August, has raised an incredible £46,875 to support people with cancer as well as their family and friends across the Highlands, Islands and Moray.

Over 160 people took part in the unique midnight 5k, running, walking, and scooting along the runway at Inverness Airport guided only by the runway lights.

Dan Mason, Airport Manager at Inverness Airport, said:

“Run the Runway is a great event to be part of, and there was a real buzz around the airport on the night. Seeing the runway lit up as more than 160 participants made their way around the 5k created a fantastic atmosphere, with plenty of energy and enthusiasm from everyone involved.

It was also great to see the wider community getting behind the event, from the volunteers and marshals to those supporting participants on the night. Raising this huge donation for Maggie’s Highlands is a fantastic result and we’re pleased to have played our part in making the event happen.”

This year’s event held special significance as Maggie’s marks 30 years of providing free cancer support at 27 centres across the UK. Every pound raised means even more people facing cancer will benefit from Maggie’s free emotional, practical and psychological support. Maggie’s Highlands welcomes thousands of visits every year and relies almost entirely on public donations and community fundraising to continue its work.

The fundraising total was boosted by a generous £10,000 match funding pledge from Heather’s Heroes, helping supporters fundraising efforts go even further.

The Heather’s Heroes Committee said:

“Heather’s Heroes was delighted to support the Run the Runway event through our match funding initiative, helping to maximise the incredible fundraising efforts of everyone who took part. It was fantastic to see so many runners come together for such a worthwhile cause, and our team thoroughly enjoyed both participating in and supporting the event on the night.

The funds raised will help Maggie’s Highlands continue providing invaluable care, support and guidance to people living with cancer, as well as their families, and we are proud to play a small part in supporting their vital work.”

The event’s highest individual fundraiser Rodney Keniston raised an incredible £1280 and has received a prize of two return flights on the Inverness to Dublin route courtesy of Emerald Airlines.

Tracey Gill, Centre Fundraising Manager for Maggie’s Highlands, said:

“We are absolutely overwhelmed by the support shown for Run the Runway this year. For 160 people to come together to raise £46,875 is a phenomenal achievement and every single person who registered, fundraised, volunteered, donated or supported the event has played a part in making this happen. These funds will make a real difference to people living with cancer across the Highlands and will help Maggie’s ensure we are here for people today, tomorrow and always.

Maggie’s Highlands would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s Run the Runway such an incredible success. A special thank you also goes to Heather’s Heroes for their generous match funding pledge. Most importantly, thank you to every participant, supporter, donor and fundraiser who made Run the Runway 2026 such a phenomenal success.
